Step-by-Step Guides

Questions

How do I look up a property in Madison?

Use the City Assessor's property lookup at cityofmadison.com/assessor/property. Type the house number and street name. The record shows the owner, assessed value, taxes, zoning, lot size, year built and past sales.

How do I look up a property elsewhere in Dane County?

Use AccessDane, the county's parcel search. Pick Address, type the street address without the city, and open the parcel. It shows the owner, assessments back to 1999, tax bills, districts and recorded documents.

Is AccessDane up to date for Madison?

Not as of the county's pages archived in June and September 2026. Madison parcels carried a banner sending people to the City Assessor, showed no owner names and had no 2026 values. Use the city's own lookup for Madison.

Can I find out who owns a house?

Yes. Ownership is a public record. AccessDane shows owner names for parcels outside Madison, and the Madison Assessor's record shows the owner for Madison parcels. Owners can hide their name on the AccessDane website only; the records stay public at the City-County Building.

Are the property lines on these maps exact?

No. Dane County says its parcel maps are for tax listing and are not a survey. For where a line actually is, use your recorded plat or survey, or hire a licensed land surveyor.
